Choose the Proper Horse Fencing

In order to keep your horses safe, you need to have good fencing in place. They don’t understand that they can’t go into certain areas or they could get hurt. It is your job to keep them safe by creating barriers. Good horse fencing will stop a curious horse whiles but does not pose an additional risk to the horse. Considering your options can help you to make the right choice.

Cross-Fencing or Perimeter

First, you need to decide if you want cross-fencing or perimeter fencing. Cross fencing can usually be moved so you can change it as needed. This can be convenient should you wish to rotate the areas where your horses graze. Perimeter fencing is fixed and goes around the outside of the area where you will keep your horses to create a contained space for them to be in.

Materials

Horse fencing can be made of almost any material. However, one thing to keep in mind is that if a horse can see through a fence, they may try to reach through it with their necks or even run through it. So, if you are using a material that doesn’t create a complete barrier, then you at least need to make sure horses can’t get their neck through. Another thing to keep in mind is that some types of materials can pose a safety risk. Barbed wire, for example, is not recommended because horses can get severely injured on it. You can create a rather secure fencing from wood, pipe, webbing, cord or wire. Just make sure that it is kept in good condition. A broken fence is an invitation to some wild horse adventures.

The biggest challenge with horse fencing is finding something that is both secure and safe. You want to keep your horses contained in a space where they won’t get hurt while also making sure your fencing choice doesn’t pose a new risk. This can be a challenge, but luckily there are many materials that you have to choose from that can create a great horse fence.
